FAQ
Questions, answered.
The things people ask most — about legitimacy, privacy, vetting, and how paying works.
Is this allowed — isn't this cheating?
No. Instudy provides tutoring, feedback, and guidance on your own work — never finished work to hand in as your own. That's legitimate learning support, and it's the only thing we match. Contract cheating ("essay mills") is a criminal offence in England, and Instudy is built specifically to stay on the right side of that line.
How is my privacy protected?
You and your tutor interact under pseudonymous handles, we collect only the data a feature needs, and sensitive content like drafts and messages is encrypted at rest. The platform is self-hostable, so your data doesn't depend on a proprietary cloud.
How are tutors vetted?
Tutors are verified to the platform — including an enhanced DBS check for safeguarding — and students see a verification badge. Tutors stay pseudonymous to students even after they're verified.
How do payments work?
Prices are agreed per order in GBP before any work starts. For now, payment is handled manually and offline, and the platform records the status; crypto payments (via Coinbase Commerce) are planned for the future.
What if I'm not happy with the work?
Re-work comes first. If the work falls short of what you agreed, your tutor will put it right — included, within the agreed scope. Your statutory rights under UK consumer law are always honoured.
What does it cost?
It depends on the order — pricing is hourly, per word, or fixed, and you agree it up front. Students pay the price they agree; tutors keep the price they agree, minus a single platform fee that's shown up front. There are no hidden fees.
Can students under 18 use Instudy?
Yes, and that's exactly why safeguarding is built in. Tutors pass an enhanced DBS check, and the product follows the ICO Children's Code — age-appropriate and safe by default.
Do tutors ever see my real identity?
No. You interact under a handle, and tutors do too. Verification happens between the tutor and the platform only — it's never exposed across the student/tutor boundary.
