FAQ

Questions, answered.

The things people ask most — about legitimacy, privacy, vetting, and how paying works.

How do you keep the help genuine?

Instudy provides tutoring, feedback, and guidance on your own work — never finished work to hand in as your own. That’s genuine learning support, and it’s the only thing we match. Editorial always works on a draft you wrote, and every order is delivered on-platform — so the help stays real.

How is my privacy protected?

You and your tutor interact under pseudonymous handles, we collect only the data a feature needs, and sensitive content like drafts and messages is encrypted at rest. The platform is self-hostable, so your data doesn’t depend on a proprietary cloud.

How are tutors vetted?

Tutors are verified to the platform, and students see a verification badge — including an enhanced disclosure-check badge where the tutor has completed one. Tutors stay pseudonymous to students even after they’re verified.

How do payments work?

You agree the price per order, then pay up front to confirm it — like a deposit that starts the work. If a dispute can’t be put right with re-work, you’re refunded, in line with your statutory rights. Re-work you don’t use isn’t refunded — the allowance is prepaid, not pay-per-use.

What if I’m not happy with the work?

Re-work comes first. If the work falls short of what you agreed, your tutor will put it right — the first rounds are included, within the agreed scope. If it still can’t be put right, you’re refunded, and your statutory rights as a consumer are always honoured.

What does it cost?

It depends on the order — pricing is hourly, per word, or fixed, and you agree it up front. Students pay the price they agree plus a flat £5 admin fee, shown before you pay; tutors keep the price they agree, minus a single platform fee that’s shown up front. There are no hidden fees.

Can students under 18 use Instudy?

Yes, and that’s exactly why safeguarding is built in. Tutors can complete an enhanced disclosure check shown to students as a badge, and the product follows recognised children’s-data-protection standards — age-appropriate and safe by default.

Do tutors ever see my real identity?

No. You interact under a handle, and tutors do too. Verification happens between the tutor and the platform only — it’s never exposed across the student/tutor boundary.
